Addiction is a psychological and physical dependence on a substance, behavior, or activity that leads to compulsive and harmful behavior. It is a chronic and often relapsing condition that can cause significant impairment in a person's ability to function in daily life. When a person becomes addicted, they experience intense cravings and often engage in compulsive behavior despite negative consequences.

Addiction can have serious physical, psychological, and social consequences, including physical health problems, financial difficulties, relationship problems, and legal troubles. Treatment for addiction typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and support from family and friends. Overcoming addiction can be a challenging and complex process, but it is possible with the right approach and support.

Here are some steps that can be helpful in overcoming addiction:

The Bible does not specifically address addiction in the modern sense, as this is a relatively recent term. However, there are many passages that offer guidance and insight into issues related to addiction.

One of the most relevant passages in the Bible related to addiction is 1 Corinthians 6:12, which says "I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but I will not be mastered by anything." This verse suggests that while we have the freedom to do as we please, we should avoid being controlled by anything or anyone, including addictive behaviors.

Another passage that offers guidance on addiction is Galatians 5:19-21, which lists the "acts of the flesh" that include behaviors that can lead to addiction such as drunkenness, sexual immorality, and idolatry. The passage suggests that these behaviors are not of God and should be avoided.

Additionally, the Bible teaches about the importance of seeking God's help in overcoming challenges and struggles, including addiction. Philippians 4:13 says "I can do all things through him who gives me strength." This passage suggests that with God's help, we can overcome any challenge, including addiction.

The verse in the Bible about no longer being a slave to sin is found in Romans 6:6, which says: "For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin."
